Ten years ago, SAF didn’t exist. But today, this segment of the biofuels market is quickly expanding, particularly as public concern about climate change skyrockets. Gevo Inc. is the only company in the world to produce SAF from carbohydrates.
"But there are no plans to expand to Canada" Pat Gruber, Ph.D., president and CEO of Gevo, says. "This is because there are no clear policies around carbon [...] So, Canada is falling behind what’s being done in the rest of the world, and I think it’s really that simple. What’s sad about that is, Canada has so much good available material, both through agriculture and forestry, and a good workforce. But there’s no market. So why would we spend time in Canada when I have a market in other parts of the world that are easy to get, where the product is valued?"
